I've owned fifthestate.net since 1999. The concept of "fifth estate" goes back to the French Revolution and the "Three Estates". The Print press or media were considered the "Fourth Estate". The Fifth Estate was considered the electronic media but also the early alternative media. The electronic media has, to a large extent become the mainstream media so the new "Fifth Estate" is the internet.
